"In God We Trust"

religion in USA (2012)

A majority of Americans report that religion plays a "very important" role in their lives [1].

During a 2012 survey [2] by the Pew Research Center, 2,973 people interviewed by phone self-identify as:

  • 73% Christian: 48% Protestant, 22% Catholic, 2% Mormon, 1% Orthodox
  • 6% another faith
  • 19.6% unaffiliated

This survey underlines the rise of the "Nones": between 2007 and 2012, about 4% more self-identify as unaffiliated. 80% percent still declare the "never doubt" the existence of God.

Surveys exhibit huge differences in results [3]; for instance, the proportion of unaffiliated (including atheists and agnostics) varies from 15% to 38%. Some surveys are based on self-identification, while others calculate church memberships.
